 Administrative Assistance Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to assist in the everyday operations of the USO of NC. Administrative volunteers answer phones, file, type, run errands, stuff envelopes, manage reservation lists for free ticket offers, and help answer questions. This is the ideal position for someone who could give anywhere between two to eight hours a day, one to three days a week.

Jacksonville Center

Kitchen/Game Room Volunteers

Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to, ensuring that each guest is provided with information and helped with any game room and computer room access, cooking of any orders and correct registering of sold items in the register, balancing monies from each shift, and cleaning the kitchen area, game room areas, and building.

Speaking Events Volunteers

This position requires volunteers that are well spoken and have knowledge of the USO of NC, the origination, and all programs that we maintain.

Deployment Volunteers

Volunteers for this position handle requests when our service members leave for abroad duty. Volunteers are responsible for care packages being handed to each service member. Special regards to the fact that we are there to be cheerful and thankful that are leaving to ensure of safety here in the United States. Volunteers are responsible for providing feedback on the event to the Administrative Assistant. We are also looking for a leader for these deployments to be handle duties such as picking up the care packages and taking charge of scheduling other volunteers for each bus or hanger unit.

Homecoming Volunteers

Homecoming volunteers are needed for this position to be at the scheduled place and time that the service members will be coming home. The USO of NC arrives at the homecoming about an hour before the service members are scheduled to be home to set up an information table and talk with the family members. The homecomings can be very early or very late, but it is very important that the families know that we support everything that they as well the service members sacrifice during deployments. The volunteers for this event will be responsible for reporting feedback to the Administrative Assistant. We are also looking for a leader for these homecomings to handle duties such as picking up supplies that are needed for the event so that the families are taken care of while waiting for their service member to come home

Rack Pack Assembly Volunteers

The USO of NC Jacksonville Center provides FRO’s of deployed Service Members with Rack Packs for the single men and women returning home from deployments. Rack Packs are assembled by volunteers who ensure that the correct items are included in the bags and that enough Rack Packs are on hand for any homecomings.

Birthday Cakes for Warriors Volunteers

Every month, a Family Readiness Officer may request a birthday cake for the single service members in their unit. Volunteers order the cake from a local bakery and deliver the cake to the service members.

Food Pantry Volunteer

This food program is for service members ranked E-5 and below. Volunteers assist with handing out food voucher and/or food from our pantry free of charge to help the service members and their family in their time of need.

Smiles Over Miles Volunteers

Every 1st Thursday of the month at 5:30pm, the USO of NC Jacksonville Center invites the family members of deployed service members to record a personal message for their loved one on DVD. The center sends the video overseas to the service member. Volunteers will assist with the tapings and the family members.

United Through Reading Volunteers

Prior to being deployed, any service member with children can come in to the center and be recorded on DVD reading a book for their child(ren). The service members then takes the DVD and book home for their child(ren) so that they can see their mother or father reading to them while they are deployed. Volunteers will assist with the tapings and the family members.

RDU Center

Center Volunteers

USO of NC RDU center volunteers answer phones, greet guests, check military ID’s, prepare sandwiches and refreshments, assist guests with airport information, flight information, ground transportation, as well as help guests with a myriad of travel dilemmas. All volunteers are also responsible for keeping the center clean and organized and restocking supplies. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least 2, 4-hour shifts per month. The RDU Center is located outside security in Terminal 1 of the Raleigh Durham Airport. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, able to undergo volunteer training, and complete a background check in order to volunteer at the center. The USO of NC RDU center is open 24 hour a day, 7 days a week.

At this time the volunteer application process for RDU center volunteers is closed. Please fill out the application below if you would like to have your name placed on our waitlist. Those wishing to volunteer for our overnight position (11pm-7am) will bypass the waitlist and their applications will be immediately sent to our Volunteer Coordinator.

Special Events/Fundraising Volunteers

The USO of NC RDU center is looking for those with special skills in fundraising, marketing, event planning, and other similar skills to assist on fundraising/ special events committees. Volunteers in this capacity would work with the center staff and current center volunteers in the planning and development, soliciting of sponsorships and donations, marketing and executing of events to support the USO of NC RDU center.

Charlotte Center

Center Volunteers

Volunteers greet guests, check military ID’s, prepare sandwiches and refreshments, assist guests with airport information, flight information, ground transportation, as well as help guests with a myriad of travel dilemmas. In addition, volunteers will occasionally be required to assist Wounded Warriors as they transfer through the Charlotte Airport. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least 2, 3-hour shifts per month. The Charlotte Center is located behind security at the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, able to undergo volunteer training, TSA fingerprinting and background check in order to volunteer at the Center.

Fort Bragg Center

Center Volunteers

Volunteers cover the center for 2-3 hour shifts on Saturday between 12:00 and 10:00pm and Sunday between 12:00 and 9:00pm. Other duties include answering phones, taking messages, making sure coffee and snacks are provided, vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom as needed, helping patrons check out games and movies, and making sure that every guest signs in.

Homecoming Volunteers

Provide support for the families of the deploying service member by keeping the children occupied through our Kidz Korner that provides arts and crafts. Must be able to set up and take down the Kidz Korner table and supplies, have good interpersonal skills and a good working knowledge of the USO of North Carolina. Arrival times may change at a moment’s notice, so the attendants may be required to stay at the Green Ramp for several hours.

Deployment Volunteers

Provide support to the military service members by handing them care packages, a friendly smile and an occasional hug as they get ready to leave. Must be able to lift 25lbs, have good interpersonal skills and have a flexible schedule as departure times may change and require the attendants to be present for a couple of hours. Attendant must also have a good working knowledge of the USO of NC.

Special Events/Fundraising Volunteers

Volunteers in this capacity assist the center staff with the set-up and take down of the site, cover the USO of North Carolina information table and ask guests for donations. As such, the attendant must have great interpersonal skills, a good working knowledge of the USO of NC, public speaking skills and be able to lift 25 lbs. Special areas of responsibility will be assigned based on the scope of the event and may include making hot dogs and hamburgers on a grill or running errands.

Tournament Committee

Volunteers are responsible for planning and implementing tournaments to be held at the center. These tournaments may include ping pong, darts, foosball, etc. Committee members will set the date, determine the rules and set-up of the tournaments, organize participants and find individuals or businesses to donate snacks/food as well as award items for the winners.

Mobile Unit

Volunteers are needed throughout the state to assist in mobile unit set-up, this includes the mounting of 46" screen televisions, set-up of a DVD player, a Wii gaming system, laptops and printers. There is also a need for volunteers to support the preparation and serving of meals, snacks, etc that may include the use of an 8-burner grill at military homecomings, deployments and special events. Every effort will be made to recruit USO of NC Center Volunteers to support events within their geographic area, additional volunteers may be needed to support these events. Travel arrangements may be necessary in cases where the mobile will not be close to a USO of NC center.
