Jacksonville Center Volunteer Opportunities

Kitchen/Game Room Volunteers

Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to, ensuring that each guest is provided with information and helped with any game room and computer room access, cooking of any orders and correct registering of sold items in the register, balancing monies from each shift, and cleaning the kitchen area, game room areas, and building.

Speaking Events Volunteers

This position requires volunteers that are well spoken and have knowledge of the USO of NC, the origination, and all programs that we maintain.

Deployment Volunteers

Volunteers for this position handle requests when our service members leave for abroad duty. Volunteers are responsible for care packages being handed to each service member. Special regards to the fact that we are there to be cheerful and thankful that are leaving to ensure of safety here in the United States. Volunteers are responsible for providing feedback on the event to the Administrative Assistant. We are also looking for a leader for these deployments to be handle duties such as picking up the care packages and taking charge of scheduling other volunteers for each bus or hanger unit.

Homecoming Volunteers

Homecoming volunteers are needed for this position to be at the scheduled place and time that the service members will be coming home. The USO of NC arrives at the homecoming about an hour before the service members are scheduled to be home to set up an information table and talk with the family members. The homecomings can be very early or very late, but it is very important that the families know that we support everything that they as well the service members sacrifice during deployments. The volunteers for this event will be responsible for reporting feedback to the Administrative Assistant. We are also looking for a leader for these homecomings to handle duties such as picking up supplies that are needed for the event so that the families are taken care of while waiting for their service member to come home.

Rack Pack Assembly Volunteers

The USO of NC Jacksonville Center provides FRO’s of deployed Service Members with Rack Packs for the single men and women returning home from deployments. Rack Packs are assembled by volunteers who ensure that the correct items are included in the bags and that enough Rack Packs are on hand for any homecomings.

Birthday Cakes for Warriors Volunteers

Every month, a Family Readiness Officer may request a birthday cake for the single service members in their unit. Volunteers order the cake from a local bakery and deliver the cake to the service members.

Food Pantry Volunteer

This food program is for service members ranked E-5 and below. Volunteers assist with handing out food voucher and/or food from our pantry free of charge to help the service members and their family in their time of need.

Smiles Over Miles Volunteers

Every 1st Thursday of the month at 5:30pm, the USO of NC Jacksonville Center invites the family members of deployed service members to record a personal message for their loved one on DVD. The center sends the video overseas to the service member. Volunteers will assist with the tapings and the family members.

United Through Reading Volunteers

Prior to being deployed, any service member with children can come in to the center and be recorded on DVD reading a book for their child(ren). The service members then takes the DVD and book home for their child(ren) so that they can see their mother or father reading to them while they are deployed. Volunteers will assist with the tapings and the family members.
